 Letter from the Editor

With Mother's Day just past and Father's Day around the corner, Bauman College would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the caregivers who raised us. As our parents age it is important for us to reciprocate the care that they gave us for so many years. To best support a graceful aging process we should find ways to provide love, emotional encouragement, and proper nutritional support.

The ideal defense against difficulties associated with aging is properly nourishing the body for preventative care or treatment of degenerative illness.

Check out our Nutrition Bytes article in this newsletter for some tips on how best to support a smooth transition into the later years of life. Also, consider signing yourself and your parents up for the August Vitality Cleansing & Rejuvenation Retreat for the ultimate whole-body healing.

Thank you to our parents, our grandparents, our mentors, our teachers, and all our caregivers. Here's to attaining the best possible health for all of us.

Nourishing Your Aging Parents and Yourself
by Dr. Ed Bauman

When I get older, losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine?
Birthday greeting, bottle of wine
If I stay out till quarter to three
Will you bar the door?
Will you still need me?
Will you still feed me?
When I’m sixty-four

Paul McCartney (The Beatles) was 25 years old when he wrote this song. Today, he is 69 and is aging gracefully. Each of us is growing older day-by-day; some healthfully, some not so well. Baby boomers are finding their children grown and taking care of mom and dad is their latest responsibility. Aging parents can require much the same level of care as young children. To help families meet the task nutritionally, I wrote a new verse to the tune of the Beetle song above. Try singing along with me.

Now that you’re older
Eating your flax
Keeps you regular
You can have a smoothie nearly every day
With green powder, berries, and whey
Forget the coffee, it’s time for tea
You’ll be feeling free
Yes, I still need you and I will feed you
When your eighty-four

healthy beet salad summer recipe from Bauman College: Holistic Nutrition and Culinary Arts
June Recipe Now that summer is here, there are a variety of fruits that you can use for this recipe, from stone fruits to berries.

Making fruit jams thickened with agar agar is a great alternative to commercial jams that are loaded with refined sugar.

Vitality Cleansing & Rejuvenation Retreat
Sign Up Now!

We have just completed our Spring Retreat at Stillheart Institute. The program was magnificent. Stillheart, surrounded by an old Redwood grove in Woodside, CA, is a dream come true for us as a place to gather to rest, re-connect with nature, and rejuvenate.

We were nourished and inspired by the return of kitchen maestros Lizette and Geoff Marx, who fed us with cleansing teas, organic fruit and vegetable juices, broths, and Vital Scoop for smoothies. Our pre and post-fasting meals were dazzling and delicious. Our clinical staff, Bonnie Clark, Marcia Stone, Sally Stewart, and Dr. Ed Bauman, delivered deeply caring and trans-formative healing sessions. Yoga and meditation, arts and crafts, sharing circle, and evening programs created a rhythm and flow of activity, stillness, socialization, and time to reflect and renew our commitment to healthy living.

It was great being with friends from previous fasts and feeling the power of being in community once again. We would love to be with you at our Summer Retreat at Stillheart. Come alone or bring your partner, spouse, or friend to help them unwind and jump start their health.

Register today for the August 6-12 retreat at the beautiful Stillheart Institute in Woodside, CA
