Helge Hellberg, Nutrition Consultant

Creator and Host of An Organic Conversation, a weekly radio show on Clear Channel's Green 960

“Bauman College for me has been far more than a Nutrition Program - it opened up my path, a path of meaning, purpose, and sense.”

Helge Hellberg, N.C., moved from Hamburg, Germany, to San Francisco in 1998, in pursuit of a more meaningful, holistic life. Having chosen to eat organic foods already in Germany, Helge went to work for California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), one of the largest organic food certifiers in the United States. At CCOF, he learned about the production of organic food, however being in charge of marketing and communications, he soon realized there was a missing link between the farmer and the consumer who is mostly interested in nutrition and health. Only a few months after Helge had started his job at CCOF, he went to an open house at Bauman College in Santa Cruz and enrolled on the spot.

Helge graduated from Bauman College in the summer of 2003 as a Certified Nutrition Consultant and soon after, accepted the position as Executive Director of Marin Organic, one of the most progressive non-profit organizations in the nation focused on sustainable agriculture. Marin Organic's goal is to create the first all-organic county in the nation - a county in which eaters and farmers acknowledge their mutual interdependence. The organization addresses economic, environmental, social, and cultural challenges in creative and innovative ways, and has become one of the leading voices of sustainable agriculture in the United States and beyond. As Executive Director, Helge regularly hosts political leaders, environmental activists, well-known authors, and international dignitaries such as Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall on their visit to Marin in November of 2005.

To reach a broader audience and give a platform for both his work with Marin Organic and the growing local and organic food movement, in 2009, Helge launched An Organic Conversation, a weekly radio show on Clear Channel affiliate Green 960. An Organic Conversation features groundbreaking initiatives and ecology-based thinking in the organic food and holistic health movement, blending science with ancient knowledge, and spirituality with many observations and stories from the land.

As an authority in the field of organic food production, sustainability, nutrition, and human health, Helge is a regular speaker at conferences throughout the United States and Canada, and has advised businesses, organizations, local and state governments, as well as U.S. Senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives, on agricultural challenges and opportunities.

"Looking back at what I've learned at Bauman, I would say that this education can serve as the foundation for any career path one could choose.  The world is getting more complex every day, we are all working on a local and international level at the same time - diseases travel between countries in a matter of hours, life-styles and cultures are being meshed together.  Between cultural exchanges and rural development initiatives, working with individual clients or for a non-profit organization or pro-profit corporation - what ever our role or career may be, all of our work and actions are guided by a certain understanding of the fundamentals of life - health, culture, food, body, mind, spirit.  We are what we eat - physically, psychologically, spiritually, politically, environmentally, and culturally - individually, and as a people.  The classes taught at Bauman College are a key for a sustainable future, for all of us."
